Ethiopia, a country located on the Horn of Africa, is currently facing serious economic problems (ethnic conflicts on its territory, falling foreign investment, declining foreign exchange, etc.). In April 2024, a team from Mission Enfance (which has been working in Ethiopia since 1994) carried out an exploratory mission in the country's peaceful south. In the area inhabited by the Gamo-Gofa ethnic group, Loretta Cointe has built numerous primary and secondary schools. In the classrooms, sheets of paper are glued to the walls instead of books.
Goal
PROVIDE EHTIOPIAN PUPILS WITH REAL TEACHING TOOLS
In elementary school, textbooks will no longer be distributed by the Ethiopian government, for lack of funds, at the start of the next school year in September 2024. In order not to penalize pupils and to reinforce serious education, Mission Enfance is distributing the entire year's textbooks to 1,500 pupils from Grade 1 to Grade 6 or 8 (8 textbooks per pupil). These books will be printed in Addis Ababa, the capital, then transported by truck and distributed in person to schools in villages around the town of Arba-Minch, in the south of the country. This operation is being carried out in coordination with local authorities and education representatives. The distributions will be carried out by Mission Enfance staff.
